Deafness and Genetic Medicine – Calls for translation of new ideas into improved clinical practice
Dear colleagues and friends, welcome to the International Symposium of Deafness and Genetic Medicine (ISDGM), 2009.
This is a great opportunity for all of us to exchange and share the latest research findings from the scientific community in the Genetics of hearing loss in the world. The intellectual debate and exchange at the Symposium will be, not doubt, inspiring and will result in further developments in the genetic medicine of hearing impairment.
Successful research programs demand input from diverse areas of expertise, and must integrate knowledge of diverse and complex aspects. We need to create a common language that enables us to share expertise across a broad range of experiences and perspectives, and expand the scope of our research to ensure meaningful assessment of societal benefit. Recent studies demonstrate that genetics can now be a common language for diverse groups. The achievement coming from genetic research is beginning to impact in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation and certainly will lead us to more effective ways of helping people with hearing impairments. Our understanding of how the hearing sense develops and is maintained must influence how we think about the normal process of hearing and should lead us to a more complete understanding of that complex process. The better understanding of hearing impairment opens the new field of hair cell regeneration based on gene therapy and stem cell research.
Genetic tools are providing us with new insights about genomic structure and gene function. The pace of gene discovery related to hearing impairment is faster than ever; and we now have a handful of innovative diagnostic approach based on genetic research, with prospects of more to come. There has never been a better time in history for genetics research of hearing like nowadays. The fundamental goal of genetics research is to develop new knowledge and tools that will provide benefit to individuals or families with hearing impairment. These individuals, who need our help, are our sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, grandchildren. Keeping them in mind, our research will be conducted towards the excellence in quality, and will take all of us closer to our collective mission: transform new ideas into improved clinical practice.
China has the biggest population and is presumed to have the biggest deaf population in the world. During the past decade, remarkable progress has been made in basic, translational and clinical research on hereditary hearing impairment in China. This international symposium will provide a platform for both Chinese and oversea scientists to show their achievement, exchange idea and collaborate in research and in clinic practice. A better understanding of the nature of the genes which cause hearing problems and the technologies turned into practical applications promises better diagnostic power and more effective methods of treatment and remediation applied.
On behalf of the Symposium organization committee, we would like to invite you to join us. We believe that the Symposium will be a great opportunity to find your research partners for the top quality scientists and other professional in this field from different countries. We look forward to meeting you in Beijing.
