Presidential Address

 

Deafness and Genetic Medicine–Calls for translation of new ideas into improved clinical practice

Dear colleagues and friends, welcome to the International Symposium of Deafness and Genetic Medicine (ISDGM), 2009.
 
This is a great opportunity for all of us to exchange and share the latest research findings from the scientific community in the Genetics of hearing loss in the world. The intellectual debate and exchange at the Symposium will be, not doubt, inspiring and will result in further developments in the genetic medicine of hearing impairment.
 
Successful research programs demand input from diverse areas of expertise, and must integrate knowledge of diverse and complex aspects. We need to create a common language that enables us to share expertise across a broad range of experiences and perspectives, and expand the scope of our research to ensure meaningful assessment of societal benefit. Recent studies demonstrate that genetics can now be a common language for diverse groups.
